Readings for First Sunday of Advent:

Leading the Liturgy During Advent

During this Advent season of reflection and preparation, we will be making a small change to our usual way of conducting liturgy.  Each Sunday during Advent, the Liturgy of the Word will be led by the Rev. Beth or by our seminarian Katherine. The Liturgy of the Table will continue to be led by the Rev. Annie or our associate priests. We hope that this format helps to enhance your Advent worship as we walk through this blessed season together.

The Episcopal service of Holy Eucharist is divided into two parts: “The Liturgy of the Word” and “The Liturgy of the Table.” The Liturgy of the Word contains the Collects and readings from Scripture.  The first reading is from the Hebrew Bible, followed by one or more psalms, and then readings from the New Testament, including the Gospel. There is also a response to God’s word from the pulpit (the sermon) by clergy or by lay preachers and prayers led by the people. The Liturgy of the Word can be led by clergy or by lay (not ordained) people.

The Liturgy of the Table is led by a priest or bishop and is also called the Holy Communion. It follows the Liturgy of the Word and consists of the Great Thanksgiving, in which the bread and wine are sanctified, the breaking of the bread, which symbolizes both the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, and the act of breaking bread at the Last Supper to share among the disciples. Communion is distributed by clergy and Lay Eucharistic Ministers to the people.  Afterwards there is a post communion prayer, a blessing by the priest, and the dismissal by the deacon or priest.

The Rev. Beth Gaines
