60th Annual Benicia Peddlers’ Fair Celebrates History, Collectibles, and Local Artisans

The 60th annual Benicia Peddlers’ Fair, sponsored by St. Paul’s Historic Trust, takes place Saturday, August 12 from 8 am to 5 pm. Proceeds from the event are used to preserve the historic building of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church while providing a unique shopping experience for collectors and enthusiasts.

What started as a small outdoor event in 1963, with a few collectible and antique stores displaying their items on tables outside St. Paul’s Church, has now grown into a grand affair. The fair boasts 300 select antique and collectible dealers from all over the country, along with a diverse range of arts and craft makers and spans the entire 11 blocks of First Street. With an estimated 25,000 attendees from all over the Bay Area, the Benicia Peddlers’ Fair is not just a shopping event; it is a celebration of history, culture, and community.

The continued success of the fair would not be possible without the ongoing leadership and help of a multitude of church volunteers who work in a variety of roles both behind the scenes and on the day of the event. Join us on Sunday, Aug. 13 as we recognize our past and present Peddlers’ Fair leaders.

Invitation to Samuel Cotton Gray Celebration Aug. 13

The relatives of Samuel Cotton Gray (1816-1892) are gathering at St. Paul’s on Sunday, Aug. 13 to remember their ancestor, who was an ardent member of the church in the latter part of the 1800s.  Church members are invited to a service in the church at 4:30 pm. Gray moved from the East Coast to Benicia in 1849. He conducted the first store opened in town and became actively involved at St. Paul’s.  Most notably, Gray served as the superintendent of Sunday School and Senior Warden. He was civic minded and held the positions of trustee for the City of Benicia and the treasurer for Solano County among other community affiliations.

SSP Mission Trip July 23-29

St. Paul’s has been involved in youth service work with Sierra Service Project for almost 30 years. Each year we send at least 20 youth and 4 counselors to Native American or urban communities to better the lives of the underserved.

This year’s mission trip from July 23 to 29 will include 27 youth and 5 adult counselors who will be helping with repairs in communities in Del Norte County in Northern California.  We are blessed with 17 returning campers, several whom are from St. Paul’s, and 10 new campers, along with 2 new counselors.

Thank you for your generous support of our youth program through our annual fundraisers. Hear all about their mission trip at our SSP Sunday church service on July 30 at 10 am.                        –Tom Sauter

Mark Your Calendars: St. Paul’s Holy Strollers Relay for Life                                         Fundraising Walk August 5-6

Join us on the track at St. Patrick’s/St. Vincent’s High School in Vallejo for a few minutes or a few hours and be part of our community fighting cancer in the Benicia/Vallejo/Napa/American Canyon Relay for Life Fundraising Walk August 5-6.

The opening ceremony and survivor’s lap will be at 10 am, Saturday, August 5.  The final ceremony and dove release will be on Sunday morning, August 6. Money raised goes to local support ACS services, research, and more. There are two steps to participate as a walker/runner – you must do both.

  • Register for the walk online at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/stpaulsbenicia23 as soon as possible. Your online fundraising information will be available once you register. You can also register by adding the American Cancer Society “FUNdraising” app on your phone.
  • Sign up for a time slot on the sheet in the Parish Hall (Google Doc coming soon). We take turns walking, and you can walk as much, or little, as you like. Greeters also needed to sit in the shade and give out small gifts to cancer survivors on behalf of St. Paul’s.

You may support the Holy Strollers and the American Cancer Society fundraising by donating online or at  several coffee hours in July (cash or checks payable to American Cancer Society or see me if you’d like to use a credit card.) We will be making luminarias during coffee hours to light at the event in honor or memory of someone affected by cancer.

Relay for Life is family friendly and all are welcome, but no pets, please. If you aren’t able to commit to walking or fundraising, we’d still love for you to stop by for a few minutes to learn more about the fight against cancer, celebrate survivors, and remember those we’ve lost.

There will be track side fundraisers, music, games, dance demonstrations, a kid’s zone, and more throughout the day. We open with a celebratory survivor’s walk at 10 am Saturday, light the luminarias around 8:30 pm, and then wrap up Sunday morning with a closing session and dove release.

Benicia Vallejo Relay for Life takes place at St. Patrick’s/St. Vincent’s High School track, 1500 Benicia Road, Vallejo. Additional parking across the street at the California Highway Patrol facility. For more information, contact Laura Peabody-Park at Lpeabodyca@hotmail.com (preferred) or (925) 451-0569 cell.

What Is Cursillo?

Have you heard members of this congregation mention Cursillo and wondered “what is that?” Let’s start with what it isn’t! Cursillo is not a cult, a retreat weekend, or 4 days of crying. Started in the 1949, “Cursillo” (cursillo de cristianidad) is a “little course in Christianity”, originally designed to bring Roman Catholic men in Spain back to the church. The Cursillo Movement is now worldwide, ecumenical, and open to both men and women. St Paul’s is associated with the Redwood Empire Cursillo Community, which stretches from Mendocino County to Benicia.                                                                                                                            A Cursillo weekend can best be described as a pilgrimage of faith, in community. You are not retreating from the world. There are meditations, short lessons, workshops, a lot of singing, a lot of eating, a lot of laughing, and, yes, a few tears. There are a few things about the weekend that Cursillistas (people who have made their Cursillo) are unwilling to share for fear of spoiling some beautiful surprises.                                                                                                The Redwood Empire Cursillo Community has weekends for 2023 scheduled at the CYO camp off Bohemian Highway near Occidental. There is a women’s weekend scheduled for August 24-27. Dawson Urban and Donna Patey are serving on the team hosting the women’s weekend. In 2024, there will be a women’s weekend February 15-18 and a men’s weekend April 4-7.                                                                                                                                                                                        If you want more information, please reach out to Donna Patey, Dawson and Andrew Urban, Steve Rodekohr, Kim Rodekohr, Jorge or Jenny Castaneda, Yann Jouvenot, David Sells, Robin Silver, Anne Seed, Cathy Cellini, Blanche Hilman, Carole Johnston, Bob or Debi Hall, or Rev. Beth Gaines.

•Register for the walk online at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/stpaulsbenicia23 as soon as possible. Your online fundraising information will be available once you register. You can also register by adding the American Cancer Society “FUNdraising” app on your phone.

•Sign up for a time slot on the sheet in the Parish Hall (Google Doc coming soon).

In 2024, there will be a women’s weekend February 15-18 and a men’s weekend April 4-7.If you want more information, please reach out to Donna Patey, Dawson and Andrew Urban, Steve Rodekohr, Kim Rodekohr, Jorge or Jenny Castaneda, Yann Jouvenot, David Sells, Robin Silver, Anne Seed, Cathy Cellini, Blanche Hilman, Carole Johnston, Bob or Debi Hall, or Rev. Beth Gaines.

New Exhibit On Display

Did you know this month marks the 30th anniversary of the completion of the current undercroft? If not, or if you are curious about this ambitious project, stop on by the display case in the south transept to learn a little bit about it. While there, you can glance at a handful of pictures from the early 1990s and get an idea of what the undercroft looked like for over a hundred years.

—Tim Markley, Archivist

TGIFF June 23

Join us Friday, June 23 for our monthly TGIFF (thank goodness it’s 4th Friday) monthly social gathering from 5:30-7 pm in the undercroft. Please bring an appetizer and beverage (alcoholic or nonalcoholic) to share.
