This Sunday’s Featured Hymns: LGBTQ+ Artists

(With thanks to Matthew Brown, Director of Music at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Atlanta)

Today’s Offertory hymn, “In Your Heart, O God, You Hold Us,” was composed by the Rev. Chris Shelton, who serves as Pastor at Broadway Presbyterian Church in New York City. This hymn comes from a recent anthology of Shelton’s hymns titled “Sing No Empty Alleluias.” Calvin Hampton wrote the tune for our communion hymn, “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy.” It’s one of several contributions of his to our 1982 Hymnal. Prior to his untimely death from AIDS in 1983, Hampton was the organist and choirmaster at the Parish of Calvary, Holy Communion and St. George’s in Manhattan. He was known for his midnight organ concerts every Friday at Calvary Episcopal Church between 1972 and 1982. These popular concerts frequently provided a brief refuge for Greenwich Village’s gay youth and those experiencing homelessness and addiction. Hampton is regarded as one of the finest American organ composers of the 20th century. The service will conclude with “Walk Forth this Day in Beauty” by Mary Louise (Mel) Bringle, Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies and chair of the Humanities Division at Brevard College in North Carolina. Bringle began writing hymn texts in 1999. Since that time, she has won a number of international hymn-writing competitions and been featured as an “emerging text writer” by The Hymn Society in the US and Canada. Her texts and translations are included in publications from numerous denominations. Join us next week as we feature national songs!

Join the St. Paul’s Holy Strollers in the Relay for Life Aug. 6-7

Mark your calendars for the Benicia-Vallejo Napa Relay for Life fundraiser: opening ceremony and survivor’s lap at 10 am on Saturday, August 6; final ceremony and dove release Sunday morning, August 7. Money raised goes to local support American Cancer Society services, research, and more.

There are two steps to participate as a walker/runner – you must do both.

  1. Register for the walk online at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/stpaulsbenicia22 as soon as possible. Your online fundraising information will be available once you register. You can also register by adding the American Cancer Society “FUNdraising” app on your phone.
  2. Sign up for a time slot on the sheet in the parish hall. We take turns walking and you can walk as much, or little, as you like. Greeters also needed to sit in the shade and give out small gifts to cancer survivors on behalf of St. Paul’s.

You may support the Holy Strollers and the American Cancer Society fundraising by donating online or at several coffee hours now through August (cash or checks payable to American Cancer Society, or see me if you’d like to use a credit card). We will be making luminarias to light at the event in honor or memory of someone affected by cancer (supplies will be available at coffee hour soon.)

Relay for Life is family friendly and all are welcome. If you aren’t able to commit to walking or fundraising, we’d still love for you to stop by for a few minutes to learn more about the fight against cancer, celebrate survivors, and remember those we’ve lost.

There will be track side fundraisers, music, games, dance demonstrations, a kid’s zone and more throughout the day. We open with a celebratory Survivor’s walk at 10 am on Saturday, light the luminarias around 8:30 pm, and then wrap up Sunday morning with a closing session and dove release.

Benicia Vallejo Relay for Life takes place at St. Patrick’s/St. Vincent’s High School track – 1500 Benicia Road in Vallejo. Additional parking is available across the street at the California Highway Patrol facility.
