Curious About Cursillo?

Have you heard members of this congregation mention Cursillo and wondered “what is that?” Let’s start with what it isn’t! Cursillo is not a cult, a retreat weekend, or 4 days of crying.  Started in 1949, “Cursillo” (cursillo de cristianidad) is a “little course in Christianity”, originally designed to bring Roman Catholic men in Spain back to the church. The Cursillo Movement is now worldwide, ecumenical, and open to all genders. St Paul’s is associated with the Redwood Empire Cursillo Community, which stretches from Mendocino County to Benicia.  A Cursillo weekend can best be described as a pilgrimage of faith, in community. You are not retreating from the world. There are meditations, short lessons, workshops, a lot of singing, a lot of eating, a lot of laughing, and, yes, a few tears. There are a few things about the weekend that Cursillistas (people who have made their Cursillo) are unwilling to share for fear of spoiling some beautiful surprises, but it isn’t a secretive cult! The Redwood Empire Cursillo Community has weekends in 2023 scheduled at the CYO camp off Bohemian Highway near Occidental. The men’s weekend is scheduled for April 13 to 16 and the women’s weekend is scheduled for August 24 to 27. Dawson Urban and Donna Patey are serving on the team organizing the women’s weekend. If you want more information, please reach out to Donna Patey, Dawson and/or Andrew Urban, Steve and/or Kim Rodekohr, Jorge and/or Jenny Casteneda, Yann Jouvenot, David Sells, Cathy Cellini, Blanche Hilman, Carole Johnson, Bob and Debi Hall, Jeff Jarvis, Mark Sackett, or Rev. Beth Gaines.
